Lily and the Holiday Secret She Almost Kept

Five-year-old Lily had bright eyes, a big heart, and one tiny problem: she couldn't keep a secret.

Mom had bought Grandma a holiday present from SMinvite and tucked it on the closet shelf. “If Grandma asks what we've been doing,” Mom said, “don't say anything about the surprise.”

Lily nodded solemnly. She was now, as far as she was concerned, head of holiday security.

Grandma came over that afternoon. “What have you and Mommy been up to?” she asked.

Lily looked at the ceiling. She looked at her shoes. Then she whispered, “My mommy said not to tell you we're wrapping your present.”

Mom froze. Grandma laughed.

“Well,” Mom said, “at least you didn't tell her what it is.”

“I know!” Lily said proudly. “I didn't tell her it's the blue scarf!”

By bedtime, everyone knew about the scarf. But Lily had one surprise she didn't have to hide: a drawing of herself and Grandma playing together, with a wobbly heart and a dog that looked rather like a potato.

“This one isn't a secret,” Lily said, handing it over. “I wanted you to have it now.”

Grandma put the drawing on the fridge. The scarf could wait until the holidays.
