Wardrobers vs. Dream Customers: Which One Are You? 😄
Share
A fun (but very real) guide from the team at SMinvite, LLC.
We love our customers. We really do. But after years of running a small business, we have noticed there are two very distinct types of shoppers out there. We lovingly call them Wardrobers and Dream Customers. Which one are you? Read on and find out. 😄
🚫 What Is a Wardrober?
You know the type. They treat online stores like a free rental service — order it, use it, return it, repeat. Wardrobers are famous for buying an outfit for a special event and returning it Monday morning. But it doesn't stop at fashion — electronics, home goods, gadgets... if it can be ordered and returned, a Wardrober will find a way.
They are not always bad people — but their habits are slowly draining small businesses dry. And unlike big box retailers, small businesses cannot absorb those losses.
🚫 Wardrober Behaviors (Be Honest With Yourself)
🚫 Wardrober Move #1: The Blind Buyer
Doesn't read the product description. Orders based on the photo alone. Receives the item and says "this isn't what I expected." Proceeds to leave a 1-star review.
Dream Customer Move: Reads the full description, checks the specs, asks a question if unsure. Orders with confidence. ✅
🚫 Wardrober Move #2: The Weekend Rental
Orders something with zero intention of keeping it. Uses it for the weekend. Returns it missing two accessories, the original box, and somehow also the instruction manual.
Dream Customer Move: Only orders what they genuinely need. Returns items (if ever) complete, in original condition, with everything included. ✅
🚫 Wardrober Move #3: The "It's Fake" Fabricator
Orders a budget product clearly listed as a budget product. Receives said budget product. Claims it's fake. Has ordered the same product six times.
Dream Customer Move: Understands what they are buying. If something seems off, contacts the store BEFORE ordering — not after. ✅
🚫 Wardrober Move #4: The Serial Returner
Has nearly a 50% return rate. Files every return as "Other" with no explanation, no photos, and no remorse. Wonders why small businesses are struggling.
Dream Customer Move: Returns are rare because purchases are intentional. When a return is needed, provides a clear reason and full documentation. ✅
🚫 Wardrober Move #5: The Incomplete Sender
Returns a phone. Missing the charger. Missing the earphones. Missing one ear cap from the earphones that were already missing. Expects a full refund.
Dream Customer Move: Returns everything exactly as received. Understands that missing items = deductions. ✅
🚫 Wardrober Move #6: The "I Didn't Read" Reviewer
Leaves a 1-star review saying "product not as described" when the product is exactly as described. Word for word. Photo for photo.
Dream Customer Move: If something is genuinely wrong, contacts the store first. Gives the business a chance to make it right before going public. ✅
🌟 What Is a Dream Customer?
A Dream Customer is the reason small business owners keep going. They are intentional, communicative, kind, and they understand that behind every order is a real human being working hard to serve them.
Dream Customers:
- Read before they buy 📖
- Ask questions before ordering, not after 💬
- Return items only when truly necessary — and always complete 📦
- Leave honest, fair reviews that help other shoppers ⭐
- Understand that small businesses are not Amazon 🙏
- Treat store owners the way they would want to be treated 💛
Why Does This Matter?
Every Wardrober interaction costs a small business real money — in shipping, restocking, lost inventory, and hours of time that could have gone toward finding better products for Dream Customers like you.
When you shop with intention, you are not just helping yourself — you are helping keep small businesses alive. And small businesses are the heart of every community, online and off.
So... Which One Are You? 😄
If you read this and recognized a Wardrober habit or two — no judgment! Now you know. And knowing is half the battle.
If you read this and thought "that's definitely me" about the Dream Customer section — thank you. Genuinely. You are the reason we show up every day.
Shop with intention. Support small businesses. And please, please return items with all the accessories. 😄
With love (and a little humor),
The SMinvite, LLC Team
